We use it here at the UO. The only question is if any intervening devices (routers??) need to be configured to route TCP/IP. If not, set up a pop daemon on your FreeBSD box, use Eudora Light on all those boxes, create usernames on the FreeBSD box, set up Eudora to point to the email address on that machine, and you're pretty much home for very low cost (Eudora is free). The only sticky thing is installing & configuring Eudora on all those machines (a five- to ten-minute job each).
