Yeah, I have the same thing, and I have a Microsoft Natural keyboard.
So I dont think it is necessarily the hardware. 

A solution? I once saw a program (sorry, I cant remember the name) that
blinked the leds on/off in patterns, this program worked fine and didnt
need hardware prompting. I'd assume that more than one such program
exists.. at any rate, running such a program when an incoming message
is detected should be trivial.
