What is the status on this? Is there something preventing the patches from
being merged?

I just ran into what seems to be this bug, but I can't be sure since there are
no stack traces supplied here. The symptoms are the same; i.e. the server
crashes when connected to. This also prevents mysql_install_db from working
properly. Attaching the stack traces produced from running both mysqld and
mysql_install_db in case they are of any use.
