Thanks for the hints, reinstalling  mesa-{libs,dri} from ports did the 
trick..X11-apps are now visible

I did not need to set -D__DRM_NEXT__ though, so I don't what was wrong..

I've drm-fbsd12.0-kmod-4.16.g20190814 installed.
