freebsd-questions is probably a better place for this. ;-)

Initially, I had installed 5.1-RELEASE. buildworld would cause sh to
barf with various signals under the RELENG_5_1 sources. I had to
perform a binary upgrade to get 5.2 installed.

I've now got RELENG_5_2, and the latest error happens during
buildkernel. I've inserted it below. FWIW, I do have the following in
/etc/make.conf:

CPUTYPE?=i686
CC=/usr/local/bin/ccache cc
CXX=/usr/local/bin/ccache c++

I've tried compiling with and without to no avail.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Not that it should matter, but I'm getting my source tree via cvs rather
than cvsup. Could this have anything to do with it?
