We just did this very thing under solaris 2.6.  If you need the detailed
steps I can email them to you.  Have done it under FBSD yet, but it was
relatively painless under solaris.  Should be pretty much the same with
FBSD.  Basically I did the following:

1) downloaded Apache-1.3.1, php3, and the latest patch of SSL (SSLeay-0.9.0b)
2) my co-worker built php3
3) i built the SSL library and patched apache
4) built apache including php3

it worked like a charm.  if you haven't already check out
	http://www.psy.uq.oz.au/~ftp/Crypto/
for the FAQ for building Apache+SSLeay.

If you need more details (I don't recall any gotchas) just ask ... #;^)
