OK, I've got it working now. Your suggestion to limit the MTU was the key. I tried 1400 on all the local boxes (pausing only briefly to find out how the !@#* to do this on Windows 2000) and all was well. It's odd that things didn't work with IP fragmentation, but I'm glad, on the whole, that they didn't, since stopping the fragmentation probably makes everything work more efficiently anyway.
