The proper way to do this is via /etc/rc.conf. My own is: ldconfig_paths="/usr/lib/compat /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/local/lib /opt/Motif/lib /usr/treats/lib" Just start with the value in /etc/defaults/rc.conf and add to it.
