I've used several types of 3Com and Xircom models -
none of them has any difficulties to use.
Just like usual external modem. ;)

ifconfig won't show anything until you set up proper PPP/SLIP(?)
connection over serial device such as your modem.
Now, there's still some questions:
1st: Does your system recognize your modem as sioN?
It should be said in messages like "...card inserted... sioN at..."
2nd: Can you use sioN to which your modem attached?
3rd: Can you communicate with your modem using cu/ecu?
