Sorry, I'm a little late.
The below will give you mod_so in both APACHE_2_0_BRANCH and HEAD (2.1-dev)

I believe in the 2.x series the configure script has been enhanced to 
automatically turn on mod_so if you request any dynamically loaded modules.
