Ok, I didn't create sufficient context:

I tried them when they were introduced by 3ware and the highest 
transfer rate I got was something like 4 MB/s while reading sequential 
data...

I removed the controler and put it into some deep drawer. Maybe it's 
time to get it out again and upgrade its firmware.
