Well, until the soft-raid support is done, you do need a 'supported' PCI 
controller (sounds like you've already resigened yourself to that). If 
you're looking to just plug in a controller, hook up the drives and go, I've 
had good luck with the Intel SRCS16 SATA controller (which is a LSI MegaRAID 
SATA 150-6 basically) but that probably a bit more than you want. LSI also 
offeres the 150-4  (US$309 vs US$389 for the 6 channel) which should be 
supported by the amr driver.
