Disabling USB Legacy support in the BIOS allows boot to proceed (when booting the disc1 iso, have not tried to boot off of the hard drive without USB Legacy support enabled as the GRUB bootloader requires it). Problem seems identical to this http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-usb/2006-February/002057.html I tried the "set hint.atkbd.0.disabled="1"" as per several guides I found online, but that failed to yield any different results.
