Hello Edward, I also have ThinkPad T61and success resolved thus issue.
Try to set 
kern.smp.disabled=1 in /boot/loader.conf
hw.acpi.reset_video=1 in /etc/sysctl.conf

But even after these changes ata subsystem does not resumed from sleep
correctly. Andrey V. Elsukov helps me with that.

A path in thread must be applied only on current version of FreeBSD. 

P.S. My laptop has Intel GM965 video.
