This creates a mystery space if one does something like
cd /usr/ports/math/lapack
make -V LDFLAGS
because of many lines in /usr/share/mk/sys.mk like
LDFLAGS ?=

echo +${XXX}+
make produces the output
echo + xxx+
+ xxx+
