Hi, The FreeBSD Handbook needs improving and I have suggestions to improve it. Yesterday I installed FreeBSD 14-RELEASE and it was a headache. I wanted the GNOME desktop environment, so I navigated the FreeBSD Handboo= k table of contents to section 8.2.2. GNOME and followed the instructions.= The outcome was that GNOME didn't work. The problem was that GNOME depends on either the X Window System or Waylan= d on FreeBSD being installed and they weren't installed. There was no ment= ioned of them needing to be installed under section 8.2.2 GNOME. Section 8.1 Synopsis states the user should understand how to install eith= er the X Window System or Wayland on FreeBSD, but I didn't see that as I a= rrived at section 8.2.2 GNOME by navigating the table of contents. I suggest stating at the start of section 8.2.2 GNOME that either the X Wi= ndow System or Wayland on FreeBSD needs to be installed, and also do it un= der the sections of the other the desktop environments. And section 8.1 Synopsis doesn't actually state the X Window System or Way= land on FreeBSD needs to be installed, it just states the user needs to un= derstand how to install them. That isn't clear. It should state the X Wind= ow System or Wayland on FreeBSD needs to be installed in order to use a de= sktop environment. I also suggest creating a section in the FreeBSD Handbook called 'Window s= ystems' and bringing the the X Window System section and Wayland on FreeBS= D section into it as subsections. Then, for example, instead of it stating GNOME requires the X Window Syste= m or Wayland on FreeBSD being installed, it can just state that GNOME requ= ires a window system be installed. Sincerely, Kolusion
