Sorry for the delay. Strangely, it took several kernels to get one that
read the UFS/FFS nvme/nvd disk FreeBSD is installed on. But I finally
built one that worked. After booting to the new kernel, I'm only too happy to
report that the sound "just works"!
You can mark your proposed changes #D45100 tested as ready to commit. :)
