This will largely be alleviated by the switch to pkgbase.  freebsd-update will
still exist, but under the hood it'll be running pkg(8) commands to update the
system.

There is also sysutils/freebsd-rustdate, which aims to be interoperable and
addresses the problem described in comment 1.
