I find a fair number of good deals in misc.forsale.computers.workstations.

For $450, that would be a full system, including a reasonable amount
of RAM and disk and a 17" colour monitor. The base itself is usually
$30-$60 these days.

If you're a poor student, or even if your not, for the initial port
you'll get a lot more bang for your buck buying a cheap, old sparc
and spending any extra you have on a fast PC for cross-compiling.
Once you get the platform self-hosting, then you can look at getting
a fast sparc to work on.
