Actually, you can, but you have to be a bit lucky ;) My sub-port collection
contains approx 350 ports, and portsdb -U fails in roughly 50% of runs.

Unfortunately, portsdb -U did not even return non-zero exit status for this
weird case

And, for the cause, I'm almost sure it is due to some intercommunications with
bsd.gnome.mk, as *every* sub-port collection without gnome ports survives
portsdb -U every time.
