the compatible hardware list, has many PCMCIA devices that are supported
under FreeBSD. There is also a list of USB devices supported, none are cdrom
although there are hard drives supported. Did you look the freebsd usb
project?
I check there every now and then, but I not done so in some time. Does
OpenBSD support usb cdroms? If so the code could most likely be ported.

Hmm, well it seems that OpenBSD support the Archos MiniCD drive, but in
PCMCIA form. Perhaps it wouldn't be that hard to make it work with USB.
