I'm using cdrtools (/usr/ports/sysutils/cdrtools) + xcdroast as a front end. I don't know if it matters or not, but it connects using the 6 pin connector to the external enclosure The laptop has a 6 pin firewire connector on the side and the docking station has a 4 pin firewire connector. I've never tried using the 4 pin connector since I don't have any 4 pin devices. Everything works as if it's a standard SCSI device.
