I ran into the same symptoms after updating from 14.3-RELEASE to 15.0-RELEASE
on a Lenovo ThinkPad T480s.

I suspect it is related to the same problem, but will grab a photo of the
screen next time this happens to be sure.

What was interesting to me was that despite not being able to boot into 15.0
due to the hang, I rebooted, selected the old 14.3 boot environment, and was
able to boot. After a `shutdown -r` (or even a poweroff, followed by a quick
manual power on with the power button), the same loader is then able to boot
the 15.0 kernel!
