Done this already.  I've done the following combinations:

ACPI disabled - using GENERIC kernel
ACPI enabled  - using GENERIC kernel
ACPI enable   - using SMP (default)
ACPI disabled - using extremely stripped down GENERIC
ACPI enabled  - using extremely stripped down GENERIC

The system I have has 2 Xeon P4 processors which
both are equiped with HyerThreading CPUS.  So I also
disabled HyperThreading in the BIOS and redid the
above 5 steps with no avail.
