The only time I have ever locked up FreeBSD like that was with a capture card. The problem was not with the card its self but rather how FreeBSD reacted to the 440FX chipset and the card. Apperently Intel kludged their origional PCI chipsets. If I kept the capture hardware open (active) for more then 20 seconds the machine would lockup hard. The reset button always worked but the power button required an ATX timeout (4seconds). I know this doesn't help much, but it might give you a place to start.
