In message <Pine.BSF.4.10.9906260357030.396-100000@localhost> Matthew Thyer writes: : Both -h and -? should generate help (typically usage) without returning : an error code but only one of these forms should be described in the : usage and synopsis of the command (IMHO that should be -h). However it : should be noted in the manual page that -? is supported. : : Or if that's too radical, put both -h and -? in the usage and synopsis. There traditionally has been no character to generate help. The h option has traditionally been unused, so would wind up generating help, much like the ? option generates help. The generation of help wasn't built into many (any) of the original BSD utilities. -: is also a good option to try, as is -{}. It is a crap shoot really. If you don't know how to use the command, you should check the man page... Typing things at random and expecting them to work is likely going to cause problems one day...
