It is not necessary to change the 1542's BIOS to boot FreeBSD.
You can install the boot manager and select which OS to boot.

Look at the FAQ, sections 2.7 throiugh 2.9.  It is a good idea to read
all of the FAQ.  See http://www.freebsd.org/FAQ/FAQ_toc.html.  Section
2.9 tells you how to install the boot manager after-the-fact.
