the web page that helped me most (I have it printed out and use it as a
checklist every time I make world was written by Nik Clayton "Using make
world to rebuild your system".  This was recently added to the FreeBSD
Handbook as chapter 18.4 http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/makeworld.html.

the only thing I do differently is to use 'mergermaster' to update /etc and
/dev (section 18.4.6)
