I sometimes find it useful to use freefall to fetch distfiles..you can upload your port there, set PORTSDIR to point to a locally checked out copy of bsd.port.mk, and use DISTDIR to point to ~/tmp or whatever. Actually I don't do this much any more now that I have a machine of my own on a fast network, but it was useful before then.
