Download the file again because I think that your file got corrupted
along the way:
{root} cp /var/ftp/pub/scitext.gz /tmp/foo.gz
{root} cd /tmp
{root} gunzip foo
{root} rm foo
{root} ls -ald /var/ftp/pub/scitext.gz
