The problem is that madt.ko needs symbols from both ACPI and the device apic code. However, both acpi.ko and madt.ko are logical pieces of acpi, as would be foo.ko and foo_pci.ko logical pieces of the foo driver. So, I should be able to say 'set acpi_load=YES' in the loader and end up with the loader trying to load both acpi.ko and madt.ko but having things work fine and if madt.ko fails to link and just throwing madt.ko away in that case. If you create an acpi.a and have the loader load a foo.a file if foo.ko doesn't exist then that gets you a large part of the way there.
