Could someone give me a brief explanation of (or a pointer to
information about) what this is, as returned by
sa -m ?

The man page just has:

k*sec  CPU storage integral, in 1k-core seconds

with no other information, and I have been unable to find anything through
mailing list/usenet/web searches.
