I'd suggest the Nvidia card. It has full 2d support in FreeBSD, and after the new year, I have word that nvidia will be compiling a native version of their GL libs for FreeBSD, (the 2d portion of the nvidia driver already works). After FreeBSD gets 3d (GL) support from Nvidia, several linux games will work such as QIII, Tribes 2, etc... as well as several other 3d games that are windows only (under wine).
