Okay, thanks to some hint from someone who's also seen troubles, I advanced a bit and know that 8007a78bfe1f still boots cleanly. BUT it seems I kept the machine on while rebuilding and eventually it did boot all the way. The message buffer was too small to hold all the boot information sadly so it's hard to say what happened.
