FreeBSD comes with a mail proxy:  It's called "sendmail".  Personally, though,
I'd replace it with qmail, just for the paranoia value.  There's no reason the
mailer on your proxy boxy should have to run as root.  I really doubt you want
local delivery on the box at all.
