Maybe I'm being incredibly simplistic here, but if you find that your /tmp is too small, then move it to a partition that does have room and make a symlink there. Similarly with /var/mquere or /var/mail. I've done this and it works fine. What am I missing? Are symlinks hugely slower or something?
