Sorry for my late reply but as I'm struggeling with ACPI and it's APM
emulation myself at the moment I think I have to correct the above
statement.

In my experience the APM emulation doesn't go as far as to enable apmd
to run under ACPI. If I try to do so, apmd complains about not finding
/dev/apmctl - which is correct as there is only /dev/acpictl. You can
try this out by using -d to start apmd in the foreground.

I still hope that I'm doing something wrong and would really love it
to stay corrected by someone. ;-)
