Either should work.

Recompiling the kernel will generate a single kernel image with all
the required functionality built in. Using loader.conf means that
your kernel image has to load some separate kernel objects from the
/modules directory in order to enable the required functionality.

"Better" is a subjective question. What might be "better" for me is
not necessarily "better" for you. Adopt the scientific method. Try
both ways and see which one suits you better.
