Samba is intended for windows <-> unix filesharing. However, this isn't
to say unix <-> unix wouldn't work; I haven't tried it myself because
it's a bit of a nutty idea. Obviously NFS/Coda/something is a better
solution for this. smbclient does a lot more than basic ftp-style
filesharing (it'll log you into a domain etc) but you're right in saying
it is a bad way of doing things on a pure unix platform.
