On a second look - now there is a residual problem. startx works. When I exit to the ordinary shell, my power-save shuts off my monitior (the one that auto shuts off the monitor when you leave it running a long time) As a result, I have then no display. Working in the dark, I can hit Alt-F4 and the screen powers up again in X. I am using a ATI All-in-wonder 8mB card with a KDS 19" monitor.
