The default dialin devices (ttyd?) expect carrier.
Maybe the modem is not providing the carrier signal.
Tell FreeBSD to ignore modem signals on the device
with an stty command on the "initial state" device:

	# stty -f /dev/ttyid0 clocal

See sio(4) and stty(1).
