You can, but that won't fix your problem.

Look at the samba nmbd program (which you should be running as well) and
the protocol level (if you haven't left it at the default).

If all else fails, read the FAQ or post to the Samba mailing list
(address in the README) or the Same news group comp.protocols.smb.
