I don't know if the manual is outdated, but for the /bin/sh shell, the 'history' command is listed as not supported for the /bin/sh shell: Command Standalone csh(1) sh(1) history No Yes No In the "man sh", about persistent history support: HISTFILE File used for persistent history storage. If unset ~/.sh_history will be used.
