 Looks like I spoke too soon.
 
 Intense disk usage seems to slow everything down.
 
 On the extreme end it seems I can lock up the system by compiling a
 kernel while doing a sftp transfer of 20MB/sec.  It will still respond
 to pings but no keyboard or ssh access.
