Oops, this PR was sitting in my mailbox. Duplicating the problem can be simplified to "[make a disposable file system with soft updates and mount it rw on /mnt]; touch /mnt/foo; mount -u -o ro /foo". I haven't been able to duplicate a problem without soft updates. Bruce
