Hi, This is going to sound like a whinge... it's not meant to be, and I'll even volunteer to do the work! One thing I've found, and have found annoyong, over the last while or so is the list of mirror sites in the handbook doesn't always match reality... Take, for example, the list of Australian mirrors in the handbook... there is a list of 4 (which I know is incorrect, because my mirror is ftp7.au.freebsd.org, and isn't listed) and it seems that ftp5 and ftp6 are also available and upto date so should be listed also. So, and I don't think this'll be to hard, would this sort of scheme help people out. I build up a database of sites that reckon they are mirror sites (which is really easy as I just have to go through the DNS and look in each sub-domain for hosts starting with ftp) and maybe once a day or so do a quick check to see if the server contains certain files and directories (i.e. a mirror MUST contain 2.2.7-RELEASE and maybe the tools directory or whatever list of stuff we come up with) or the database could contain info on what releases they hold (I've seen people on the mailing lists ask where that can get files from an old release, this'll tell them). Phew, so there would be two possible, and possibly coexisting, outcomes to the project 1) A list of sites that contain a minumum set of stuff, and/or 2) A list of sites and the releases that they currently hold. The database could then be used to authomatically build the mirrors list in the handbook. Thoughts? I'm not on -doc yet, so please cc me with ideas.
