Booting from the image

FreeBSD-14.0-ALPHA4-amd64-20230901-4c3f144478d4-265026-mini-memstick.img

gives the same effect on my HP EliteBook as I've reported previously - rebo=
ots
while AHCI mode is set in BIOS settings and boots normally while IDE mode is
set.

Graham, Toomas, while I've started participating in this bugreport with rat=
her
superficial notes but finally I've investigated the bug to the extent I bel=
ieve
I had found the core issue - this is some bug in BIOS code (the int13h piec=
e).
I tried to show how I've ended up with this conclusion, though probably some
reasons I've missed.

As of a workaround, don't imagine if it is possible though this issue is so=
me
very opaque race condition that is hardly catchable and seems fires up upon
some asynchronous events on the bus from other devices, and it's a pity tha=
t it
presents in HP (and, as reported, Dell) products :( (though they may share =
the
code and consequently the issue).
