You probably won't need that. If all you want to do is allow a DOS program (ie. DOOM) to use the IPX protocol, you will probably just need to run some of the stuff in the PKTDRV (packet driver) directory. In most cases, you first need to run the driver for the actual network card, probably sn2000.sys (in config.sys) or sn2000.com. This should tell you that it's found your card and report the hardware address (you won't need this). Next you run the IPX layer driver, probably dpdipx.com and you should be away. I'm not sure what the eth.sys is for. I'm sure you already have, but read the READMEs in this directory >I'm really groping here... I think win3.11 provides an ne2000 driver. >Can I get my two machines to talk using dos? using windows? using >something else? I've no idea where you could get such a driver for DOS. Best to install the TCPIP protocol in windows and use a DOS shell. I think all the files you need are provided in win3.11. They definitely are in W95. If you install SAMBA on your FreeBSD box, you can create win3.11/95 file and printer shares. >Also, what's the IPX stuff that doom supports? What might I need >to get doom to use the network? The pktdrv/pdipx.txt mentions a ``netx'' Do you want two DOS machines to play DOOM, or are you looking to connect a DOS DOOM to a Linux DOOM (running on FreeBSD of course)? I don't know how Linux DOOM works. I suppose it still uses IPX. If it does, you should be OK. See Above. Getting two DOS dooms working should be fine. Just load up the sn2000.com followed by dpdidx.com before you fire up DOOM. A while ago I tried to get DOOM running in a win3.11 dos box to connect to DOOM running raw DOS using ne2000.sys and ipx.com (or similar). I wouldn't work. I could only get doom to connect if all machines were running win3.11 dos boxes or all plain DOS. Very odd. >program -- what's that? where does it come from? > Don't know. >Thanks for your patience. > >Dave Bodenstab >imdave@mcs.net No problem, Jeff. --------------------------------------------------- Jeffery Bond <mailto:jeffbond@compuserve.com> <http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jeffbond> ---------------------------------------------------
