So, being on a deadline, I grudgingly tried to install RedHat last night.
To my surprise, it had the same problem - it couldn't write partition
information to to the dka0 drive. Suspecting a bad drive, I swapped it for
a fresh one. RH seemed content enough after doing this, however FreeBSD
now exhibits a different behavior: As shown above, it doesn't show the
disk slice. So no partitions can be made, yadda yadda.
Let me know if you need any additional info on the machine, I'd love to see
the ES40 in the supported list.
