I haven't used one of these myself, but I can't imagine that there's
anything specific about them which would cause a problem for FreeBSD.
Out of the box, most modems will try to run at full speed, but you can
influence this by setting S registers.  I'm sure that the K56s are the
same in this respect.

Yes.  There are two conflicting standards.  What's the bet that you'll
end up with the one they choose not to supprt?
